Striking the right balance between first tuning into a student's abilities and individual needs, then appropriately challenging that student without daunting or overwhelming him/her must be difficult for any teacher, but Matthew manages this with ease. He's a patient teacher with an easy, relatable manner and I love how his enthusiasm is contagious. In just 3 lessons, the progress my son has made is notable in both his saxophone playing as well as his understanding of the fundamentals of Music Theory. Thanks to a combination of Matthew's wealth of musical knowledge, clear explanations, well sourced and interesting reference materials to enhance learning and practice, as well as praise (when merited) and encouragement, my son's confidence and enthusiasm have resurfaced. He always looks forward to his lessons.
Just completed my latest lesson, and I've left with my mind blown. I was worried that scales were going to take forever to learn and memorise, yet after an hour lesson I could identify a lot of key signatures almost straight away, and I managed to transpose a song on the fly. On top of that he managed to tweak my pitch and really work on the voice of my flute. I cannot recommend this tutor enough whether it be for musical theory or for practical.
Matthew has been a brilliant tutor. His holistic approach to learning the saxophone has allowed me to monitor my own progress and really feel at ease with the instrument. His lessons are full of enthusiasm and encouragement as he adapts his own tutoring to the areas you need to improve upon. He supplies great material to work on but also makes sure to ask if you’re comfortable with the pace of learning. It’s great to find a tutor who allows you to feel in control of your own playing and musical abilities. Not only will you come away from Matthew’s lessons with a broad musical knowledge and foundation of your instrument, but a real motivation to improve and hone your abilities. 5 stars from me!
As an absolute beginner to saxophone playing Matthew has shown such patience, enthusiasm and knowledge to help me progress. It’s always been a dream of mine to learn the saxophone and I feel that without Matthew’s teaching methods I would have struggled. I am now able to read music and started to learn to play songs that I never thought I would! Matthew tries to keep everything super simple and breaks down each lesson to manageable steps. I would recommend Matthew as a teacher to any level he is really quite inspiring. Thank you for your support.
